Gas South District is bigger than first-time visitors expect. Knowing the basic geography in advance turns a confusing arrival into a quick walk from the car to your seat. This guide is the orientation you wish someone had emailed you before booking.
The campus, not just the arena
Gas South Arena (the former Infinite Energy Arena, rebranded in 2022) seats roughly 13,000 for concerts and sits at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth. Gas South Convention Center offers about 90,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space plus meeting rooms, adjacent to the arena under the same Gas South District campus. Gas South Theater (formerly the Hudgens Theater) is the 700-seat sister venue used for comedy, family shows, and smaller touring acts.
All three venues are part of the same Gas South District campus at the corner of Sugarloaf Parkway and Crescent Center Boulevard. They share parking lots and access roads.
A multi-event weekend — concert at the arena Friday, expo at the convention center Saturday, family show at the theater Sunday — doesn't require moving your car between venues.
What's walkable from the campus
Within the campus: arena, convention center, theater, the campus hotel (the Hilton Atlanta Northeast), and several parking decks.
Outside the campus: nothing meaningful is walkable. Sugarloaf Parkway is not pedestrian-friendly, and the nearest dining is 1+ mile.
Plan to drive (or rideshare) for dinner.
Most dining is a short drive
Pleasant Hill Road between Satellite Boulevard and Buford Highway is one of the densest Korean dining corridors in the Southeast — Honey Pig, Iron Age, Breakers, and the H Mart food court are within a five-minute drive. The Pleasant Hill and Satellite Boulevard restaurant corridor is 5–10 minutes from the Gas South campus.
Steve Reynolds Boulevard adds a second cluster of chains and sit-down restaurants.
Sugarloaf Mills is the 1.2-million-square-foot outlet and entertainment mall on Sugarloaf Mills Circle, anchored by Bass Pro Shops, Burlington, and a Regal cinema. The mall has a food court plus several sit-down options on its perimeter.
Hotels are spread across a wider area than the district itself
Some properties advertise as 'near' Gas South but require a longer drive than expected. Map the actual route before booking.
The closest hotel cluster is the Pleasant Hill / Gwinnett Place corridor, about 5–10 minutes from the venue.
Sugarloaf Mills hotels are 7–12 minutes; Steve Reynolds hotels similar; Old Peachtree hotels 12–18 minutes.
Traffic patterns to know
Pleasant Hill Road and Satellite Boulevard back up sharply between 4:30 and 6:30 PM on weekdays and starting about 90 minutes before any major Gas South event. The pre-event crush is consistent — plan to be at the venue 90 minutes before showtime if you want margin.
From I-85, Exit 108 (Sugarloaf Parkway) is the cleanest approach to the Gas South District; Exit 104 (Pleasant Hill Road) is faster for the hotel/restaurant corridor.
Weekday rush-hour adds 15–25 minutes to any drive in the corridor between 4:30 and 6:30 PM.
What surprises first-time visitors
The size of the parking lots. The campus can absorb a sold-out arena event plus a convention move-out simultaneously.
The quality of the Korean food. National-level KBBQ is 5 minutes from the venue.
The lack of walkability. This is a suburban district designed for cars.
Best fit, worst fit
Best fit: drive-in event weekends, family trips, group bookings, suburban-style stays with free parking.
Worst fit: visitors who want a walkable, urban-style weekend. Those should pick Atlanta proper.
If you're combining a Duluth event with downtown Atlanta sightseeing, split your stay (1 night downtown, 2 nights in Duluth).
Step-by-step
- 1
Map the actual drive from your hotel to the venue
At your actual event-night time.
- 2
Pick a hotel within 10 minutes of the campus
Pleasant Hill, Sugarloaf Mills, or Steve Reynolds.
- 3
Plan dinner off-campus (5–10 minute drive)
Nothing walkable from the venue itself.
- 4
Use Exit 108 (Sugarloaf Parkway) on event nights
Avoid Pleasant Hill (Exit 104) routing during peak.
- 5
Build a 90-minute pre-show arrival buffer
Last-mile traffic is the slow part.
Quick checklist
- ✓Drive time mapped at event-night hours
- ✓Hotel within 10 minutes of the venue chosen
- ✓Dinner plan made off-campus
- ✓I-85 exit decided based on traffic patterns
- ✓Pre-show arrival buffer built in
